2.9–4 million Americans have taken anabolic steroids at some point in their lives.
This study from the National Library of Medicine points to the total U.S. population who have taken steroids in their lifetime, but the numbers are significantly more concentrated in various subculture populations. While fitness enthusiasts, bodybuilders, and elite athletes are the most common individuals reported to take steroids, steroid use is also common among military, law enforcement, and even adolescents.
Whether for strength, endurance, physique, or performance, steroids are often consumed covertly and obtained from black or gray market sources. In a study conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency, 53% of 38 injectable anabolic-androgenic steroids and 21% of oral tablets were found to be fake. The amount of counterfeit, dangerous, or ineffective steroids is likely quite significant and extremely widespread.
We want to protect these individuals, and provide the knowledge and ability to know what these substances actually contain.
